Having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Hebrews 1: 4
The Epistle to the Hebrews was written as a motivation, a "word of exhortation" (Hebrews 13:22). It is a sermon written for 1st century Christians.
Most of the letter's audience was of Jewish origin and had been Christian for some time. They remembered the preaching of the apostles, the miracles experienced and the powerful action of the Holy Spirit. In the early years, they had suffered insults, harassment, confiscation of property and had been banned from synagogues. Progressively, they got tired. They were discouraged. Over time, they were at risk of becoming victims of chronic pessimism.
The profile of these Christians has a great correspondence with modern Christians. We too, at times, become depressed, discouraged, frustrated and pessimistic about the result of having accepted Christ. Through the neglect of faith, we move to disbelief. From disbelief we move on to the hardening of the heart. From that point on, we easily come to systematic doubt, and Christ's public renunciation is only a step away.
Therefore, the exhortation to the Hebrews also applies to us, who often look at the Christian. The central idea of the Epistle to the Hebrews is that Jesus is better than everything those ancient Christians had known before in Judaism.
Jesus is a better revelation than that given to the forefathers. His name is better than the name of all patriarchs. He is a better leader than Moses, a better priest than Aaron. He brought a better priesthood than the Levite priesthood. He established a better covenant. The gospel is better than the law. Calvary is better than Sinai. His blood is better than the blood of bulls, goats and sheep. In Christ, we hope for a better country than the Canaan of the Israelites’ dreams. We expect the new Jerusalem from above, better than the old city, the capital of Judaism.
In short, Jesus Christ is better for you too. He is superior to everything you have left. Nothing can compare to His excellence. Don't look back! He's superior to everything you've ever known. And no matter how much or what they offer you, Jesus covers any offer.
